Building access

Access throughout Birkbeck, central London

All the College main teaching buildings have a reception desk. These are staffed by attendants, who can provide a wide range of advice and support. The reception desks have induction loops for hearing-impaired people, and the attendants receive disability awareness training.

There are accessible toilets (disabled toilets) for wheelchair users in most buildings. Single-lever mixing taps, grab rails and handrails are being fitted in several male and female toilets in buildings without disabled toilets.

The door handles being fitted throughout Birkbeck are of the type recommended by the Centre for Accessible Environment, being either lever or 'D' type handles, and doors are fitted with push plates.

To assist people with impaired vision, many fixtures within the Birkbeck buildings, such as staircase handrails, are already painted in colours that contrast with their background, and most stair nosings are prominently marked. When redecoration programmes are planned, account is taken of the need to use contrasting colours for fixtures and backgrounds to enhance accessibility for people with impaired vision.
