Senate House Library

Am I eligible to join for free?

Some students can obtain free access to Senate House Library. Select your school from the list below, and if your course is listed then your school will pay for your Senate House Library membership in 2016/17. Once you have joined you can borrow books and use their e-resources both on and off-site.

If your course is not listed you may still join Senate House Library upon payment of a fee (£103 for the 2016/17 academic year).

All academic staff can obtain free access to Senate House Library.

School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy

  • All research postgraduate and taught Masters students
  • All full-time second and third year undergraduates
  • Graduate Certificate in Politics
  • All part-time third, fourth, and subsequent year undergraduates
  • All Honorary Visiting Fellows and Professors

School of Arts

  • History of Art Graduate Certificate
  • All research postgraduate and taught Masters students

How do I join?

Students - Eligible courses

  • If you are enrolled on an eligible course (i.e. your course appears in the list above), you will need to show your "Certificate of Birkbeck Student Eligibility" at the Senate House Library membership desk, along with your Birkbeck ID card.
  • To see your Certificate of Birkbeck Student Eligibility log in to your My Birkbeck. Click the "Senate House Library Access: Eligible" hyperlink, which will display the certificate. You can either print a copy of this, or show it to Senate House Library staff on a mobile device.
  • Please note: You must show the “Certificate of Birkbeck Student Eligibility”. A copy of your ‘My Birkbeck’ profile, an enrolment letter, or a fees receipt, is not sufficient to register with Senate House Library and you will be turned away.
  • Registrations for 2016/17 are until 30th September 2017.

Students - Not Eligible

  • If your course is not listed above you can still join Senate House Library by paying the membership fee yourself (£103 for 2016/17).
  • Log in to your My Birkbeck, and click the "Senate House Library Access: Not Eligible" hyperlink. This will take you to a secure payment page. Once the fee is paid your application will be processed immediately.
  • After payment return to your My Birkbeck. You should now see "Senate House Library Access: Eligible". Click this hyperlink to see your "Certificate of Birkbeck Student Eligibility" . You need to show this certificate (either printed or displayed on a mobile device) at the Senate House Library membership desk, along with your Birkbeck ID card.

Distance Learning Students

  • If you are a distance learning student you can join Senate House Library by emailing your "Certificate of Birkbeck Student Eligibility" to shl.membership@london.ac.uk. After joining you will be able to use the e-resources remotely.
  • If you are enrolled on an eligible course follow the instructions under Students: Eligible courses to access your Certificate.
  • If you are not enrolled on an eligible course you will need to pay the membership fee yourself - see the instructions under Students: Not Eligible

Academic Staff

  • All academic staff are eligible to join Senate House Library for free. You will need to print out an eligibility form and have this signed by a School Manager or Assistant School Manager to verify that you are a current member of staff. Take the completed form with your Birkbeck staff ID card to the Senate House Library membership desk in order to register for the first time or to renew your membership.

Professional Services or Administrative Staff

  • Professional services or administrative staff are not automatically eligible for free access to Senate House Library. However, you can still join by paying the membership fee (£103 for 2016/17).
  • Please complete an application form and take it to the Issue Desk at Birkbeck Library. Payment may be made by cash or credit/debit card.
  • Once Birkbeck Library staff have validated the form take this along with your Birkbeck ID card to the Senate House Library membership desk.
  • If you are a member of professional services or administrative staff and Senate House Library membership is necessary for your work then your department may be willing to pay the membership fee on your behalf. Your application form will need to be signed by an authorised signatory, and a fund code for the necessary recharge must be provided. Take the completed form to Birkbeck Library for validation. You should then take this form, with your staff ID card, to the Senate House Library membership desk in order to register.
