Library tours and workshops

There are various activities taking place during the Autumn Term to help students familiarise themselves with the Library and its services. These include daily tours, a new session for students with dyslexia or a print impairment, and a series of workshops which will be held on two separate Saturdays in October and November.

Library Tours

Tours are being offered 2nd October - 21st October, duration 20 minutes, meet at the Library entrance:

  • Monday - Friday at 5.30pm
  • Saturday at 1.15pm.

No need to book – you can just turn up and join one.

Get the most from your readings with text-to-speech software

These workshops will explain the advantages of software that reads aloud from the screen and we’ll show you how you can convert readings set for your modules so that you can read them with this software. They will be held in the Library Seminar Room on Level 1 of the Library on the following dates and there is no need to book: 

  • Tuesday 17 October: 12:30pm-2pm
  • Tuesday 17 October: 6pm-7:30pm
  • Monday 6 November: 1pm-2:30pm
  • Monday 6 November: 6pm-7:30pm

Saturday workshops

On Saturday 14 October and Saturday 4 November we will be delivering workshops on a variety of topics. The workshops will be held in the Library Seminar Room on Level 1 of the Library. All staff and enrolled students are welcome but you do need to book (there are a maximum of 30 places on each workshop). They may not run if less than 5 people book - we will contact you if a workshop is cancelled. You can book on any or all of the sessions if you want to. The topics covered are:

  • Getting Ready to Study - Introduction to information management, academic writing (Birkbeck Study skills) & what the Library has to offer: MOODLE module and resources by subject, etc.
  • Getting to grips with your reading list - Understand what you are being asked to read (book or book chapter, journal article, etc) and learn how to find it in the Library and eLibrary.
  • Finding information for your essays and assignments - Find books, articles, etc. on a particular topic. Learn to search the Library catalogue and our new Discover article search service by subject.
  • Google Scholar vs Birkbeck Discover - Pick up tips on using Google Scholar and Birkbeck Discover. Essential functionality and features of both services. Learn how to effectively search.
