Joining Birkbeck Library

There are various ways to join the Library. How you join, and what services you can expect from us, will depend on which of our categories you fall into.

Students or staff at publicly funded higher education institutions

How do I join?

1. To borrow books from us you will need to join either The Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) Access Scheme or the M25 Consortium of Academic Libraries (Access25). Otherwise you may join for reference use.

2. Download and complete our membership application form.

3. Bring the form to our Admissions Desk with your home institution ID and a passport sized photo to be used for your Birkbeck membership card (we accept printed digital photos).

4. if you have joined SCONUL bring your approval email, if you have joined the M25 scheme bring your Access25 card.

Please note: If you are from Amity University, Anglo Educational, Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), Fordham University, Hult Business School, London Art History Society, LEB Education, London School of Business and Management, Medipathways, ONCAMPUS London or Pearson College, your institution has a separate arrangement with Birkbeck Library. Please ask at your home institution for details.

What does my membership include?

  • If you have borrowing rights under the SCONUL or M25 Schemes you can borrow five 3 week or 1 week loan items.
  • If you don't have borrowing rights under SCONUL or M25, you will have reference only membership of the Library.
  • Access to our walk-in PC.
  • A guest photocopying account on request at the Help Desk on level one.
  • A guest wi-fi account if you prefer not to use Eduroam. Ask about this at the Help Desk on level one.

Academic visitors and research students

How do I join?

1. You will need either, a letter from a Birkbeck department showing that you have made an arrangement with them that includes Library membership; or you can email the to request permission to join.

2. Download and complete our membership application form.

3. Bring the form to our Admissions desk with a letter from a Birkbeck department or the Director of Library Services confirming your arrangement, photo ID, and a passport sized photo to be used for your Birkbeck card (we accept printed digital photos).

What does my membership include?

  • You can borrow five 3 week or 1 week loan items.
  • Access to our walk-in PC.
  • A guest photocopying account on request at the Help Desk on level one.
  • A guest wi-fi account if you prefer not to use Eduroam. Ask about this at the Help Desk on level one.

Governors, Fellows or life members of Birkbeck

How do I join?

1. Download and complete our membership application form.

2. Bring the form to our Admissions desk with a letter from your School, photo ID, and a passport sized photo to be used for your membership Birkbeck membership card (we accept printed digital photos).

What does my membership include?

  • You can borrow five 3 week or 1 week loan items.
  • Access to our walk-in PC.
  • A guest photocopying account on request at the Help Desk on level one.

Membership packages for external organisations

How do I join?

To arrange a Birkbeck Library membership package for your organisation, email our User Support Manager.

Our current rates are:

Reference only (per student - excluding VAT)
Four months £35
Six months £50
Nine months £65
Twelve months £90

Borrowing up to five items at any time (per student - excluding VAT)
Four months £70
Six months £90
Nine months £130
Twelve months £160

Please note: If you are from Amity University, Anglo Educational, Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), Fordham University, Hult Business School, London Art History Society, LEB Education, London School of Business and Management, Medipathways, ONCAMPUS London or Pearson College, your institution already has a bespoke arrangement with Birkbeck Library. Please ask at your home institution for details.

What does my membership include?

This will depend on your bespoke membership package, but is likely to include use of most materials in the Library and may include borrowing by your members and staff.

  • Reference membership for £35.
  • Borrowing membership for £70: five 3 week loan items and 1 one week loan item.

For an annual £70 fee you can borrow five 3 week loan items and 1 one week loan item.

How do I join?

A one-day reference pass costs £6. Please bring personal photo ID to our Admissions Desk.
