21 December - 2 January

Thursday 21 December Opening hours: 08:30 - 16:00*

*Birkbeck’s main Malet Street building will be completely closed over the Christmas period, from 16:00 on Thursday 21 December 2017 to Tuesday 2 January 2018 inclusive. This is to allow for essential maintenance work on the building’s electrical infrastructure.

This means that the Library, the computer rooms and teaching rooms, and all catering facilities across campus will be closed for the entire Christmas break and there will be no access to the main Malet Street building for students or staff. The eLibrary and all eresources will be available throughout the Christmas break. For more information about what's available to you - online resources and support.

Alternative study spaces in the Clore Building

For students who need access to study space during this period a number of study rooms will be available in the Clore Management Building (opposite the Malet Street building) for student use, from 8:00 - 20:00 every day during this close period, including Thursday 21 December, with the exception of 25-26 December 2017 and 1 January 2018. There will be Wifi access in these rooms, but no computer facilities.

Access to UCL Main Library for Birkbeck students, staff and alumni

Birkbeck Library has negotiated an agreement with UCL to provide a one-off reference access to UCL’s Main Library during this period. UCL’s Main Library opening hours are:

  • Friday 22 December   8:00 – 21:00
  • Saturday 23 December - Monday 1 January 11:00 – 21:00
  • Tuesday 2 January    9:00 – 21:00

The entrance will be via Gower Street. Birkbeck staff, students and alumni will need to show their Birkbeck photo ID card to UCL Security Staff when entering the Main Library.

Access to other libraries via the SCONUL scheme

As a Birkbeck student or staff you can become a member of the free SCONUL Access scheme which gives you access to libraries in London and the rest of the UK. More information on accessing other libraries and SCONUL can be found on the Library website. We encourage you to join the scheme as soon as possible, so that you have the appropriate documentation ready before the Christmas period when some libraries might be open on a self-service basis. Please note that full-time undergraduate students will only be able to use SCONUL to access other libraries for reference, but not to borrow books.

You will be able to use SOAS library if you have joined the SCONUL scheme in advance. Their opening hours during the Christmas period are:

  • Thursday 21 December and Friday 22 December 9:00 – 23:30
  • Saturday 23 December   10:30 – 23:30
  • Sunday 24 December to Tuesday 26 December    Closed
