Assistive Technology Booth

An assistive technology booth, room 411, is available on the 4th floor of Malet street main building (take the lifts behind reception to the fourth floor, turn right - room 411 is first on the left). It is specifically for disabled and dyslexic students to use, access being controlled by logon. The room is provided for students requiring Dragon Naturally Speaking software where the user dictates to the PC using a headset (helpful for people who have problems typing e.g. RSI). Other assistive technology software is available in the room and students may prefer working here if for example they need to work with an assistant or need a quiet room to concentrate.

The room is for the use of one person at a time (unless they are accompanied by an assistant) and can be booked by contacting the IT Helpdesk. You can also check your booking online. The room is occasionally booked by College Staff. Please abide by the rules when using room 411.

The booth also has a height adjustable table and an orthopaedic chair and specialist mice and keyboards can be attached by request. The following software is available:

PC by the Door

  • Book scanner
  • Inspiration (mind mapping software)
  • ClaroRead (scanning, reading and proofing tool)
  • ZoomText (magnification and speech output software)

PC next to the far wall

  • Scanner with OmniPage 15 scanning software
  • Dragon Speech input software (voice to text software)
  • Inspiration

If you require help in accessing the PCs in the booth, or if you would like a demonstration and assistance with initial training of Dragon Naturally Speaking please contact Assistive Technology Support, disit@bbk.ac.uk, Tel: 0207 079 0717.
