A. D. Bressac, Alegoria ŕ Lei do Ventre Livre

Sometimes, even popular bodies achieved monumental status, as in this allegorical work by French sculptor A. D. Bressac, commissioned on occasion of the so-called 'Law of the Free Womb' of 1870, which declared children of slaves born after that date to be free citizens. The black boy raising a table with the text of the new law with one hand, while a broken chain hangs from his other wrist, is thus an embodiment of the state´s beneficial action rather than of black people´s struggle against slavery.
