At Birkbeck, Unviversity of London we appreciate that education isn't linear, and some of the biggest barriers to accessing university is confidence, especially around academic study skills. Things like note-taking, academic reading and critical analysis, to name a few.

Enter Plan B!

What is Plan B and is it for me?

Plan B is FREE programme for prospective students, designed to help boost confidence and develop transferable academic study skills. It consists of two parts, in one session:

  1. Interactive academic study skills workshop
  2. Taster lecture, to put into practice the academic skill just developed

What is this Plan B session all about?

6 6.45pm: Academic study skills workshop Note taking

In this session, Richard Carabine, Learning and Development tutor within the School of Business, Economics and Informatics, will be covering:

  • preparing for note taking
  • helpful abbreviations for speedy note-taking
  • using different note-taking methods
  • effective note taking strategies for you

7 7.45pm: Taster lecture '10 Things you need to know about Happiness'

This taster lecture by David tross, an academic within the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy, will be guiding your note-taking skills by looking at:

  • key findings of national and global happiness and wellbeing research
  • the relationship between wealth and happiness
  • which people and populations are happiest and happiness at work.
  • exploring the philosophical tradition of happiness, wellbeing and resilience and their relevance to people's lives today
