About us
The Department of European Cultures and Languages is a centre of teaching and research in French studies, German studies, European cultures and the aesthetics of kinship and community.
In an age of ever-increasing globalisation and intercultural exchange, we believe that knowledge of other languages and cultures is ever more essential. We offer flexible combinations of language studies with European societies and cultures, suitable for a wide range of individual requirements.
We have experienced staff who are passionate about their subjects, many national and international visitors and a dynamic and cosmopolitan student population.
French at Birkbeck
We have built up an excellent reputation in French studies over the years, both for the quality of our language teaching and for our research.
We undertake research in a wide range of areas, such as literature from the Renaissance to the twenty-first century, film and contemporary history.
German at Birkbeck
We provide a lively and stimulating environment for the study of German language, literature and culture at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
We maintain good contacts with the Goethe-Institut. The Goethe-Institut is the internationally significant cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany.
We are proud of our vibrant and dynamic research culture.
The School of Arts
We are part of Birkbeck's new School of Arts, which unites us with the departments of English and Humanities, History of Art and Screen Media, Iberian and Latin American Studies, and Media and Cultural Studies.
