What's it like studying Biological sciences at Birkbeck?

Careers in Biological Sciences

Our degrees allow our graduates go on to a wide range of careers in industries and sectors including: microbiology, healthcare, the pharmaceutical industry and education. You'll learn both the theory and practical aspects of each subject through classes and practical work in our laboratories.

Research projects and Lab facilities

Research in our subject area is internationally recognised across a range of areas in the biological sciences, including bioinformatics, chemical biology and microbiology. Our main focus, for which we're world renowned and in which we have a long and distinguished history, is in structural biology – the understanding of biological processes through study of the structure and dynamics of the macromolecular machines that make up the living cell.

Our research plays a key role in the joint UCL/Birkbeck Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology (ISMB), a centre of excellence coordinating Birkbeck and UCL's research into the biomolecular mechanism and its exploitation for medicine and biotechnology.
