The Careers and Enterprise service at Birkbeck is dedicated to connecting our students and recent graduates with a broad range of employers, helping you to match your unique skills and experience with exciting jobs and micro-placements. These opportunities enable you to create and build professional networks, apply your learning in the workplace and gain valuable experience to enhance your career.
How to access jobs and micro-placements
Students and recent graduates can access current job vacancies and micro-placements through Handshake, Birkbeck's career management service. Through Handshake, you can also sign up for events, book one-to-one appointments, network with employers and lots more.
To access Handshake
Current students:
- Log in to your My Birkbeck profile. Select the Careers and Enterprise tile and follow the link to Handshake.
- Alternatively, you can log in to Handshake directly using your Birkbeck email address.
Recent graduates:
- Follow the instructions in the Information for Birkbeck Alumni section.
Micro-placements
Our Micro-placement opportunities aim to support and enhance the career development of Birkbeck’s students and recent graduates (those who have graduated within the past two years).
Micro-placements are work projects designed to give you professional work experience and develop your careers skills, while you study. We work with a range of UK employers, across multiple sectors, to provide exciting and valuable opportunities to Birkbeck students and recent graduates.

Forage
Forage is a work experience programme covering a diverse range of bite-sized 5-6 hour virtual experience programmes that give students and graduates a genuine career advantage with the world's top companies. This experience can enhance your CV and help address experience gaps when applying for longer-duration placements.
- Current students can access Forage by logging in with their Birkbeck email address and following the instructions on screen.
- Alumni: as Forage is open access, you can create a profile with your personal email address and follow the instructions on the site.
