Study Sociology and Social Research

Our internationally renowned staff lead undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in sociology and a range of interdisciplinary postgraduate social research programmes.

Sociologists at Birkbeck are involved in making sense of the turbulent world we live in and its possible futures. Our approach is informed by post and decolonial studies, race-critical, feminist and indigenous approaches. Our sociology teaching is also strongly linked to our expertise in psychosocial studies, allowing students to explore connections between the psyche and the social world.

Our social research programmes are interdisciplinary, theoretically informed and socially engaged. They are designed to prepare you for further research in the workplace or in MPhil/PhD study. We deliver in depth training in both qualitative and quantitative research and the philosophies that underpin them. We provide a variety of modules in qualitative and quantitative methods in line with Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) training requirements. You will be taught by world-class researchers about the approaches they use themselves in their work.
