Study Gender and Sexuality Studies
Gender and sexuality shape every part of our social and cultural worlds. At Birkbeck, gender and sexuality studies explore how power, identity and difference are shaped - and contested - through gendered and sexual relations. We interrogate how norms of gender and sexuality are formed through shifting dynamics of race, class, disability, space, colonialism and nation.
From struggles over rights and representation to debates about justice, safety and freedom, questions of gender and sexuality sit at the heart of today’s most urgent public conversations. Our programmes give you the tools to analyse, challenge and meaningfully engage with these issues.
Our teaching and research approach is boldly interdisciplinary, drawing on sociology, politics, law, history, psychosocial studies, philosophy, media and cultural studies. You’ll work with leading feminist, queer, trans and intersectional scholarship to explore critical questions about identity, power, violence, representation and social change.
You’ll join a vibrant research community committed to critical inquiry and public engagement. You'll build advanced skills in theory, analysis and research design, preparing you for careers in academia, policy, education, health, NGOs, the creative industries and beyond.
