Birkbeck, University of London Gender and Sexuality Studies

Teaching and research that is boldly interdisciplinary

Gender and Sexuality Studies

Why study Gender and Sexuality Studies at Birkbeck?

Gender and sexuality shape every part of our social and cultural worlds. You'll explore how power, identity and difference are shaped - and contested - through gendered and sexual relations. We interrogate how norms of gender and sexuality are formed through shifting dynamics of race, class, disability, space, colonialism and nation. From struggles over rights and representation to debates about justice, safety and freedom, questions of gender and sexuality sit at the heart of today’s most urgent public conversations.

Our teaching and research approach is boldly interdisciplinary, drawing on sociology, politics, law, history, psychosocial studies, philosophy, media and cultural studies. You’ll work with leading feminist, queer, trans and intersectional scholarship to explore critical questions about identity, power, violence, representation and social change.
