HyFlex

Harnessing the latest technology for in-classroom and online teaching

We’ve invested in installing high quality, state-of-the-art HyFlex audiovisual technology into almost all Birkbeck classrooms to give students who are eligible to use it, choice over whether to join classes on campus or online.

For some of our modules and courses, you can choose on a session-by-session basis whether to attend in person or online.

The technology, which allows you to take part fully in live teaching sessions, including asking questions and participating in discussions, means you benefit from the same learning experience, whether you are in a physical Birkbeck classroom in central London or somewhere else – you choose.

  • What are the benefits of HyFlex?

HyFlex not only makes it easier for you to balance your studies with your work or home life, it can also help if you have accessibility requirements or additional needs, and it is great for those who miss a class and need to catch up on it later. It has three core benefits:

    • Real-time choice You decide session-by-session whether to attend in person or online
    • Same experience, different formats Whether you're in the room or online, you’ll see, hear, and participate in the same teaching activities
    • No compromise on quality Birkbeck classrooms are equipped with high-quality cameras, microphones, and interactive displays to ensure everyone gets the same experience.
  • Why is our approach to HyFlex different?

We are committed to offering our students with as much choice as we can over how and when they study, so we offer one of the most extensive ranges of HyFlex courses and modules of any multi faculty UK university.

You can find out which modules are in person, available via HyFlex or online only by reading the individual course page.

If you’re starting a course with us in 2025/26 , more modules may be available via HyFlex as well as on campus in the future because we’re developing our HyFlex provision over the coming months and years.

  • Who is eligible to use hyflex?

You can see whether a module or course is available via HyFlex on the relevant course page.

If a course is available via HyFlex, most students should be able to attend teaching sessions remotely.

Students who require a Student visa to study in the UK will not be allowed to attend teaching sessions via HyFlex as this could affect their visa. They will only be permitted to attend classes in person on campus.

Students who are in receipt of Student Loans Company (SLC) maintenance loans, must attend at least one event in person per week.
