Our work in east London

We work with a range of partners in Newham to provide advice and guidance to local residents about access to Higher Education, as well as working with other departments in Birkbeck to share research and expertise.

Coronavirus update: Due to the ongoing situation with regards to coronavirus (COVID-19), we have stopped all our face-to-face outreach in Newham but continue to provide online support and activities for east London residents.

Support for prospective undergraduate students

  • We deliver activities and workshops across Newham for those considering taking their first undergraduate degree. These activities provide advice, guidance and learning opportunities for groups typically underrepresented in Higher Education.
  • Our activities include:
    • Big Ideas public lecture series
    • Get Started workshops: Preparing for Study, Writing an Application and Personal Statement, and Fees and Finance
    • Information stalls at community events and festivals
    • Application and Personal Statement drop-in workshops at Newham Community Neighbourhood Hubs, such as Stratford Library and Beckton Globe
  • Online advice and events for prospective and undergraduate students can be found on our Get Started and our Personal Statement Tool pages. We are also planning to move our Big Ideas public lecture series online. Please check the Birkbeck Events page for our upcoming online events. 

Support for east london graduates

  • We offer a range of workshops and activities for underemployed and unemployed graduates in the borough of Newham. 
  • The programme includes information and guidance about postgraduate study, alongside career and employment workshops delivered by Birkbeck's Careers team. 
  • Participants can access additional careers support while learning more about postgraduate study and how this might fit with their long-term career ambitions.
  • Our activities include:
    • Careers Workshops delivered by Birkbeck Careers
    • Postgraduate Get Started workshops: Preparing for Study, Writing an Application, and Fees and Finance
    • Postgraduate taster lectures
  • Get Started: Postgraduate Study has now been moved online and can be booked on to through the Birkbeck Events page. We are currently in the process of moving careers support online.

community leadership for newham residents

  • We provide free workshops for Newham residents involved in community action or volunteering in the borough of Newham. These workshops are delivered by lecturers from the BSc Community Development and Social Policy and focus on the topic of Community Leadership.
  • We deliver these workshops in local community venues and residents receive a certificate of participation if they attend all four workshops in the series.

Our partnerships in Newham

  • Our work in Newham is supported/funded by London Legacy Development Corporation. We also work in partnership with the Local Authority and other Community Groups.
  • Our partners support us to build links with local residents and deliver our work in community venues. We attend local authority/community events, forums and boards across - sharing our knowledge about access to Higher Education, our programmes and taking part in wider conversations about employment, education, training and life-long learning in the borough.
  • We're also looking forward to developing our work with other universities in the borough.
