Research overview
I am an expert in Quaternary palaeoenvironments, with particular interests in sediment dating methods (OSL, radiocarbon), fluvial sequences and integrating geological data with numerical modelling.
Since 2017, I have been working with Iraqi colleagues (Dr Ismael Al-Ameri from the University of Baghdad; Dr Jaafar Jotheri from the University of Al Qasidiyah) to investigate the Holocene history of both the Arabian Gulf (Al Ameri and Briant, 2019) and, more recently, the Najaf Sea, where analyses are ongoing after fieldwork in September 2019.
I have recently completed some work on improving radiocarbon pretreatments on plant material, which is both important and timely, and supported by a NERC Radiocarbon Facilities Grant, in collaboration with Dr Harry Langford (Geography, Birkbeck), Dr Fiona Brock (Cranfield Forensic Institute) and Professor Danielle Schreve (Geography, Royal Holloway, University of London). We currently have follow-on funding from Birkbeck’s Research Innovation Fund to extend this approach to build a more chronologically robust framework of environmental change during the neanderthal-modern human transition in Britain and the near continent, using both plant and beetle remains in collaboration with Dr David Smith (University of Birmingham) and Dr Philippa Ascough (Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre).
My work with numerous European colleagues to better integrate numerical computer modelling and geological records within the FACSIMILE network (Field And Computer SIMulation In Landscape Evolution) is also ongoing, following initial publications in 2018 (Briant et al, 2018 c and d), one of which has developed the CLEOPATRA model to include periglacial processes, based on research initiated during a 2010 Natural England ALSF grant.
