Biography
Sean Hamil is a Senior Lecturer in Management in the Birkbeck Business School. He is is the academic programme director of the Birkbeck portfolio of sport management programmes, and a Director of Birkbeck Sport Business Centre, one of Britain’s leading academic centres for the study of the business of sport – www.sportbusinesscentre.com.
His key research interest is in the field of the governance and ownership structures of sport organisations, in particular football club ownership structures with a specific reference to the mutual ownership model, and the associated organisation of sport competitions by these organisations.
He has extensive experience in delivering high-level executive education to senior managers in the European sport industry:
- He is a member of the academic scientific committee of the Executive Master in Global Sport Governance (MESGO) in which Birkbeck is a partner with four other leading European universities: Centre de Droit et d’Economie du Sport, University of Limoges, France; Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany; Institut Nacional d’Educacio Fisica de Catalunya and Lleida University, Barcelona, Spain; HEC Lausanne, University of Lausanne, Switzerland. The programme is a high-level executive training programme supported by four of Europe's leading sport federations: EHF (the European Handball Association); FIBA (International Basketball Federation); IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation); and UEFA (Union of European Football Associations), together with the Council of Europe.
- He is a member of the academic scientific committee of the UEFA MIP (Executive Master for International Players) programme, in which Birkbeck is a partner with the Centre for the Law & Economy of Sport (CDES), University of Limoges, and with UEFA.
- He delivers the module on “The Organisation of World Football”, which explains the organisation and governance structures of world and European football, on the UEFA Certificate in Football Management (CFM), a management development programme for executives in UEFA member national associations and other stakeholders in European football.
- He is a guest lecturer on the Euroleague Basketball Institute/Vytautas Magnus University Sport Business MBA on the subject of sport governance.
- He was the academic lead for the FIFPro (World Football Players Union)\Birkbeck Certificate in Professional Education (Postgraduate) executive education programme (2015).
He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the 11th International Sport Business Symposium – The Future of the Olympic Games. Paris, France, 8th August 2024.
Before entering academic life, he worked in economic forecasting and marketing consultancy with the Henley Centre for Forecasting, now part of the WPP international marketing and advertising services group. He later co-authored and author two books on corporate social responsibility – Changing Corporate Values. London: Kogan Page, (1990); and Britain’s Best Employers. London: Kogan Page, (1991).</
