Biography
Dr Lizzie Hughes joined Birkbeck as a Lecturer in Criminology in 2026 and is Programme Director of the new BA in Criminology and Psychological Studies.
Lizzie’s main research areas are surveillance, trans theory and trans politics, mental health, and the prison. They are currently working on a book about British anti-trans discourse and the informal surveillance of gender in public toilets and everyday life, under contract for the Gender and Sociology series at Bristol University Press.
Lizzie is Dialogue Editor at Surveillance & Society and Board Member at the Surveillance Studies Network, and is involved in a variety of feminist networks.
Prior to joining academia full-time, Lizzie ran a community-led LGBTQI+ mental health project for seven years. They continue to facilitate workshops on topics such as radical anti-carceral approaches to mental health care, supporting people who hear voices/have unusual perceptions, and trans awareness and inclusion.
