Testing the waters: how citizen science helped make statistics less scary

Say the words "quantitative analysis" to a room full of social science students and watch what happens. Eyes drop to phones. Bags are quietly repacked. Someone near the back develops a sudden, urgent need to go to the loo. It is, for many, the academic equivalent of being asked to volunteer for jury service: technically unavoidable, faintly dreaded, and assumed to have nothing to do with real life.

But numbers stop being frightening the moment they mean something to you. That, in short, is the thinking behind an approach employed in the quantitative research methods module this year: get students out of the seminar room and onto the London canals with water testing kits in hand.

It is hard to think of a topic more timely than water. As of this summer, more than half of England was in drought, following the driest July on record (1).

Meanwhile, only about 14% of England's surface waters are rated as having "good" ecological status, while all water bodies were found to contain toxic chemicals (2).

Add to this roughly 1.9 million hours of sewage discharged into England’s rivers in 2025 alone (3), and it becomes clear that our understanding of one of our most precious resources is running dry rather faster than the resource itself.

Official monitoring, however, is slow, expensive, and thin on the ground - full assessments by the Environment Agency now operate on a 6-year cycle (4).

In comes citizen science as a way to fill in data gaps and empower communities to care for their local water bodies. FreshWater Watch has improved our understanding of water quality across the country through simple, safe and effective colour-matching sampling techniques. Over the past decade, volunteers across England have collected nearly 40,000 publicly available water quality tests (5), all gathered by people just as mystified by science as these students.

What better way to teach research methods than to have students help generate the very data they will later analyse? This is frankly, the whole point of geography and environmental science: the classroom is useful, but the field is where it actually clicks.

As such, student groups were tasked to go out in the field to test for nitrates, phosphates and water clarity at various points along the London canals. Results were contributed to the wider FreshWater Watch dataset, which was brought back into the classroom for our lessons in quantitative statistical analysis.

The pedagogical logic here draws on constructive alignment: students become active participants in building the very dataset they later interrogate, which gives otherwise abstract numbers a sense of ownership and meaning (6).

Framing the fieldwork as a day out rather than a task mattered too. The emphasis was on the shared experience and peer bonding, not the research methods. Data logging via their mobile devices is already second nature to students, leading to the task feeling effortless rather than effortful (7).

By the time students saw their sampling points plotted on a map, several had already started speculating. Unprompted, the classroom erupted in discussions about whether water quality might differ from site to site, arriving at their own null and alternate hypotheses through curiosity, long before we ever discussed formal hypothesis testing.

The numbers back up the shift. At the start of the module, 80% of students reported never having taken a quantitative methods class, and average self-rated comfort with statistics sat just under 3 out of 10. Sentiment towards enrolment in the module was described, in their own words, as "daunted," "nervous," if occasionally "curious."

Halfway through the module however, comfort with data formats and descriptive statistics had climbed to 6 out of 10, and the vocabulary had shifted to "hopeful," "excited" and, still, "curious."

By the end of the module, 89% of students rated topic explanation and learning support in the module positively. One comment sums it up rather better than any statistic can: " Really enjoying this potentially dull (shhh) topic. […] Having the opportunity to do water testing is a huge bonus."

Turns out fieldwork and statistics anxiety don't mix - in the best possible way.
