Professor Claire Callender awarded an OBE in New Year Honours

Claire Callender, Professor of Higher Education Policy at Birkbeck, University of London, has been awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours 2017, for services to higher education.

Claire Callender, Professor of Higher Education Policy at Birkbeck, University of London, has been awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours 2017, for services to higher education.

Prof. Callender researches and teaches in Birkbeck’s Department of Psychosocial Studies and has been has been Professor of Higher Education Studies at University College London’s Institute of Education since 2010.

She is Deputy Director of the Centre for Global Higher Education, and leads the Centre’s social and economic impact of higher education research programme.

Prof. Callender's research in to higher education policy focuses particularly on student finances and related issues, such as the effects of tuition debt on graduate financial and life decisions.

She has been commissioned to undertake research for some of the most significant committees of inquiries into student funding in the UK since 1997 and has been called upon to give evidence to the House of Commons Education and Skills Select Committee on several occasions.

Prof. Callender was awarded a Fulbright New Century Scholarship for 2007-08 and was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard Graduate School of Education conducting comparative research on student funding. She was appointed a member of the Academy of Learned Societies for the Social Sciences in 2003 and is a Fellow of the Society for Research into Higher Education.

The New Year Honours list recognises the achievements of a wide range of extraordinary people across the UK, with a total 1,197 people receiving an award this year - over 120 of them for contributions to education, children’s services and equality and diversity. The Honours list is put together by nine independent committees set up by the Cabinet Office.
