London Uni Connect successfully launched the first webinar in its brand-new Pathways Series on Wednesday, kicking off with an inspiring and practical session on personal branding led by Dale Willis from My Great First Job.

In a competitive world where many students achieve similar grades, Dale explored the crucial question: How do you stand out? Through engaging examples and actionable insights, he demonstrated how young people can use social media and personal development to create a strong, authentic personal brand that gives them the edge in university, apprenticeship, and job applications.

Participants learned how to use LinkedIn to build professional connections and present themselves in a positive, career-focused light, as well as how to use TikTok and Instagram strategically to showcase interests, projects, and achievements. Dale highlighted how these platforms can help students express their individuality and create meaningful talking points for interviews and personal statements.

The webinar also included practical advice on boosting employability, such as:

  • Finding free online courses relevant to future career goals.
  • Joining professional associations and industry bodies to demonstrate engagement and commitment.
  • Developing a consistent online presence that reflects personal interests and ambitions.

Dale emphasised that a personal brand isn’t about self-promotion, but about self-awareness, consistency, and authenticity. Personal branding is as important as grades and encouraged students to start building theirs now.

With over 180 students, parents, and teachers from schools and colleges across London in attendance, the Q&A session was lively and insightful. Attendees asked a wide range of questions from how to start networking online to managing digital footprints, and Dale provided practical, easy-to-follow guidance that young people can put into action immediately.

This engaging start to the Pathways Series set the tone for what promises to be a valuable programme of events helping students make informed choices about their future.

Next up in the series, HigherIn will deliver the upcoming webinar: Apprenticeships: Earn While You Learn, an informative session exploring the apprenticeship application process and how students can secure a degree apprenticeship.
