Government-backed scheme to support Birkbeck students with overseas work and study opportunities

Birkbeck secures Turing Scheme funding, giving students the chance to study, work or volunteer abroad in 2025/26.

Birkbeck has secured funding through the UK Government’s Turing Scheme for the 2025/26 academic year, opening up opportunities for students to study, work or volunteer abroad with financial and practical support.

The scheme is designed to help students gain international experience, develop new skills and explore different cultures while enriching their studies. Options range from short community projects in Morocco to language courses in France or Germany, as well as academic placements in countries such as Japan and India.

The Turing Scheme provides grants to cover living costs, travel and additional needs such as disability support. For the 2025/26 year, Birkbeck’s funding will support placements lasting from two weeks to one month, offering flexibility for both short summer experiences and longer academic exchanges.

Financial support will vary depending on destination and placement length, with extra grants available for students who meet the Department for Education’s disadvantaged criteria or who have SEND or disability needs.

Applications open in January 2026, with an early deadline of 31 March and final deadline in May. Placements will take place between 11 July and 31 August 2026.

John, a PhD History student, said: “My time abroad was an amazing experience in the most fantastic setting. I really feel that I have broken the back of my PhD now. Living in the centre of Florence was incredible, I saw so much art and history. It’s a wonderful opportunity for anyone.”

Further details on destinations, eligibility and how to apply will be released soon through the Student Bulletin and Birkbeck Study Abroad page. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this chance to broaden their horizons and strengthen their future prospects.
