Inspiring the next generation of climate leaders: Blue Coat School's Climate Change Conference
Below, Dr Aideen Foley reflects on the impact of university outreach in secondary education, following her visit to Blue Coat School in Coventry to participate in their Climate Change Conference.
In June, I had the pleasure of returning for a second year to Blue Coat School in Coventry for their Climate Change Conference. This brilliant event brought together Year 10 students, teachers, and guest speakers to explore some of the most pressing issues facing our planet.
As part of the schedule, I delivered an interactive lecture on climate adaptation. Drawing on research I completed in Trinidad and Tobago as part of the NERC-funded SUNRISE project, students were challenged to find creative solutions to issues like extreme weather and coastal change which are already impacting lives and livelihoods. Students quickly grasped the complexities of these problems, suggesting a range of possible solutions including nature-based coastal management options, managed retreat from land prone to flooding, and constructing buildings on stilts.
I also gave a careers talk on sustainability, highlighting the diverse paths available in this growing sector and the role that university can play in helping students develop the skills they need to fulfil their career aspirations.
James Sanders, Head of Geography and Assistant Head at Blue Coat School shared his thoughts on Aideen's session:
“We were thrilled to have Aideen join us at our annual Climate Change Conference at Blue Coat School. The event enables students to engage with environmental issues on a deeper level, thinking about the problems and solutions with academics in this field. Alongside this environmental career pathways were shared, highlighting the many ways our students can engage and be a part of the conversation.”
Many thanks to James and the team at Blue Coat School for hosting such a remarkable event.
