Professor Kevin Ibeh, Pro Vice Master (International), Courtney Tangyuk, International Marketing and Recruitment Manager and Andrea Williams, Internationalisation and Partnerships Manager welcomed the new cohort of Chevening scholars at a reception at Birkbeck on Tuesday 30 October.

Established in 1983, the Chevening programme is one of the UK government’s flagship international scholarship schemes. Available in over 150 countries and territories, the scheme attracts promising professionals from the fields of business, academia, the media, and civil society with the potential to develop into future leaders in their chosen field.

Birkbeck continues to benefit from participation in the Chevening Standard Scholarship scheme while contributing 20% of the fees for the degree programmes. The College also joined the Chevening Partnership scheme that provides five awards with fully-funded fees, enabling Birkbeck to raise its international profile through Chevening's global network.

Chevening Scholars play an active role in our lively and diverse student community. This year’s scholars hail from 24 countries: Albania, Azerbaijan, Botswana, PDR Congo, Cambodia, Egypt, Georgia, Ghana, Kiribati, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Morocco, Mexico, Pakistan, Panama, Russia, Serbia, Somalia,  Somaliland, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. The students will study a wide range of subjects, including screenwriting, business innovation, global politics and sport management.

Professor Ibeh commented: “I heartily welcome our latest cohort of Chevening scholars to Birkbeck, University of London. Congratulations on becoming part of the prestigious Chevening global family of over 50,000 scholars and alumni. Your decision to join Birkbeck, a world-class research, teaching and internationalist institution is an excellent one, and I have no doubt that your time in our superbly-located Bloomsbury campus, and the UK, will be incredibly memorable, enriching and life-transforming. My colleagues and I are keen to support you as you navigate the next year of wonderful new experiences, and transition into the Birkbeck alumni community.”
