Birkbeck to kick off the new academic year with three weeks of events and activities

The Big Birkbeck Welcome 2025 offers students opportunities to connect, explore London, and discover everything the university community has to offer.

As the new academic year begins, the Big Birkbeck Welcome 2025 - a three-week programme of events designed to help students settle into university life, build friendships, and explore the vibrant Birkbeck community – is set to launch. Running from 22 September to 10 October, the Welcome programme combines practical support, cultural exploration, and plenty of social opportunities.

At the heart of the programme is the Welcome Fair on 4 October, spread across Birkbeck Central and Malet Street buildings. Students can meet representatives from the Students’ Union, discover the wide range of societies and sports clubs, and learn about university services. A dedicated quiet hour ensures the event is accessible to students with sensory needs, while outdoor spaces will provide a relaxed setting to socialise and connect.

The weeks leading up to and following the Fair are packed with opportunities to get involved. Highlights include the Afternoon Tea with the Vice-Chancellor - a chance to hear about leadership and career journeys in higher education – alongside a Sports Day; a Student Networks meetup with zine-making; and an Open Mic and Karaoke Night.

For those looking to explore beyond campus, events range from an Embassy Walking Tour to an all-day London sightseeing adventure, with the programme drawing to a close on 10 October with a Thames boat tour to Greenwich.

Students can also take part in hybrid sessions, such as an informative talk on academic and accessibility support, ensuring that all members of the Birkbeck community can participate whether on campus or online.

The full programme of events is available on the Birkbeck Students’ Union website.
