Professor Michael Thomas, from Birkbeck’s School of Psychological Sciences, has been appointed as the next Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) to the Department for Education (DfE). He will take up the role on secondment from January 2026.

Professor Thomas has directed the Centre for Educational Neuroscience (CEN) since 2010. The CEN is a collaborative research centre spanning Birkbeck and the UCL Institute of Education. Its mission is to strengthen evidence-informed education by bringing neuroscience, psychology, and educational policy and practice into meaningful dialogue. The Centre’s work includes translating insights into how the brain learns into approaches that can support teachers and improve classroom practice.

As Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Thomas will play a critical role in ensuring that scientific evidence is embedded at the heart of government decision-making. For the DfE, this includes providing expert advice across a broad portfolio covering learning and skills, children’s health and wellbeing, school sustainability, and the use of technology in education. He will also contribute to the UK’s wider network of departmental CSAs, coordinated by the Government Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Dame Angela McLean.

Professor Thomas commented:

“I'm very excited to be taking on this role. It's long been my interest to ensure that the latest findings from the science of learning are used to help educators and policymakers improve the learning outcomes, health, and wellbeing of both our young people and lifelong learners.”

DfE Permanent Secretary, Susan Acland-Hood said:

“I am delighted to announce Michael Thomas as the new Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department for Education starting in January.

“As a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at Birkbeck University, and as director of the University of London Centre for Educational Neuroscience, Michael’s wide-ranging research has provided invaluable insights into child and adolescent development and psychology.

“His extensive research in this field will prove invaluable in supporting the department’s wider work to give children the best start in life.

“I would also like to thank Professor Russell Viner for his dedication and guidance as Chief Scientific Adviser over the past three years. His ambition and hard work have been instrumental in driving forward the goals of the Department for Education.”

Government Chief Scientific Adviser Professor Dame Angela McLean added:

“Professor Michael Thomas brings a wealth of experience with him to the role of Chief Scientific Adviser at the Department for Education. He will be a great addition to our network of chief scientists. I look forward to working with him to put excellent science advice at the heart of decision making."

Professor Thomas’ appointment reflects both his long-standing contributions to the field of educational neuroscience and Birkbeck’s commitment to advancing research that informs and improves society.
