Birkbeck announces Social Sciences Festival 2025

A series of events bringing together academics, students, and activists for a range of engaging talks, films, and interactive sessions.

Birkbeck is thrilled to announce the Social Sciences Festival 2025, a celebration of research and scholarship within the School of Social Sciences. The festival will take place from June 3 to June 12, 2025, featuring a series of engaging events designed to bring together academics, students, and activists.  

FESTIVAL SCHEDULE: 

Tuesday 3 June 

  • The festival will kick off with a seminar and book launch titled "Black Feminist Theory, Intersectionality and Collaboration: The Global Challenge to Decolonising Higher Education." This event will provide insights into how Black feminist theory is utilised by scholars to decolonise higher education.  

Wednesday 4 June 

  • A panel discussion on "How do we champion Aid, Reparations and Social Justice in a New World?" will address the current challenges and opportunities in advocating for foreign aid and reparations in today's global political climate.  

Thursday 5 June 

  • The festival continues with a roundtable on "Food Politics: Belonging, Identity, and Sustainability," exploring the intersections of food politics with social, cultural, and environmental practices.  

Friday 6 June  

  • A workshop, “Coexistence: workshopping positive visions for humans and wildlife” will explore the major current challenges around human-wildlife coexistence and includes group sessions that invite attendees to explore how we can share the world with wildlife. 

Monday 9 June 

  • Shadows of Her - a presentation and discussion workshop to introduce the novel on Shadows of her, written by Nouzha Mabrouk. 

  • The "Co-produced Research in the Justice System: Questions, Challenges and Opportunities," session which will delve into the participatory approaches in crime and justice research, featuring the launch of the short film "What Do You Think?". 

Wednesday 12 June  

  • The festival will conclude with a discussion on "Carceral Diagonalism: The Punitive Safety Politics Linking Left and Right Anti-gender Mobilisations in Britain," examining the convergence of punitive safety politics across different political spectrums.  

Professor Matthew Davies, Executive Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences commented: "We are excited to showcase the breadth and depth of our research and to foster meaningful conversations on critical social issues. The Social Sciences Festival 2025 is an opportunity for the community to engage with our work and to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on these important topics."
