New London Architecture (NLA), which showcases London’s best and most innovative projects in its annual New London Awards, has announced Birkbeck’s 373 Euston Road building as the winner of the ‘Learning’ category.

This is a notable achievement as the category recognises all educational establishments, from nurseries to schools, academies, universities, and training centres. Others shortlisted in the Learning category included Nourish Hub, a mixed-use community food hub in Hammersmith, and Ibstock Place School in Wandsworth.

373 Euston Road was celebrated by the NLA, for ‘breathing new life into the existing structure through the insertion and addition of 21st Century teaching spaces

Councillor Sabrina Francis, Mayor of Camden, opened 373 Euston Road in October, unveiling a plaque that celebrates nearly 200 years of Birkbeck providing education in Camden. Students who are now enjoying the space were consulted by architects and the building was designed around their needs.

The new state-of-the-art teaching centre is set over seven storeys and houses a striking 180-seat copper-clad lecture theatre with a roof terrace; ten new classrooms for between 30 to 60 students; a student lounge and café; and social learning areas. The building has a BREEAM 'Excellent' sustainability rating with features such as green roof, rainwater harvesting system and photo voltaic system which converts sunlight into electricity.

Benjamin ProskyExecutive Director of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter (AIANY) and the Center for Architecture, and NLA Awards International Jury Member, said: “They took a mundane building and gave it expression. It stands out.”

Daniel Xuereb, Director of Estates at Birkbeck, commented: “We’re delighted that 373 Euston Road has been recognised by the NLA for its major transformation from a 1920s former car showroom to a striking teaching and learning space. 373 Euston Road contributes to our long-standing ambition of every student being taught on Birkbeck premises as part of our work to improve our students' educational experience.”
