English language requirements
The English language requirements for our courses are provided on individual course pages as minimum IELTS scores, however we accept many other tests and qualifications.

Undergraduate Entry Requirements
Applicants from Norway who have completed the Vitnemål fra den Videregående Skole/Vitnemål for Videregående Opplæring can be considered for direct entry to an undergraduate course at Birkbeck. Opplæring certificates that grant access to higher education should include the phrase "oppnådd generell studiekompetanse". The marking scheme used for the Vitnemål fra den Videregående Skole is on a scale of 0 to 6 with 6 (saerdeles tilfredsstillende/excellent) being the highest and 2 (matelig/poor) being the minimum pass mark.
Applicants with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or A-levels will be considered for direct admission to our undergraduate degree programmes. IB requirements range from 28 to 33, depending on the course.
Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements can consider a Foundation course, which allows students the chance to progress onto Birkbeck’s Bachelor programmes.

- A-level ABB = 128 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer 5 (descriptors and meanings: Meget god kompetanse/meget tilfredsstillende - Very Good)
- A-level BBB = 120 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer 4 (descriptors and meanings: God kompetanse/tilfredsstillende - Good)
- A-level BBC = 112 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer 4 (descriptors and meanings: God kompetanse/tilfredsstillende - Good)
- A-level BCC = 104 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer 3 (descriptors and meanings: Nokså god kompetanse/noenlunde tilfredsstillende - Fair)
- A-level CCC = 96 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer 3 (descriptors and meanings: Nokså god kompetanse/noenlunde tilfredsstillende - Fair).

Postgraduate Entry Requirements
Applicants from Norway would need to have completed a post-2003 Bachelor’s degree or pre-2003 Candidatus Magisterii from an accredited university.
If you do not meet these criteria, you can apply for OnCampus' Master's Foundation programme, which is available for 2- or 3-term progression onto a wide range of Master’s degrees at Birkbeck.
Norwegian degree classification:
- A/1.5; Norwegian Candidatus Magisterii classification: 1.5-1.0 (alternative classification: An excellent performance, clearly outstanding. Shows a high degree of independence; English translation or equivalent: 1st)
- B/2.1; Norwegian Candidatus Magisterii classification: 2.5-1.6 (alternative classification: An average performance, above average. Shows a certain degree of independence; English translation or equivalent: 2:1)
- C/2.7; Norwegian Candidatus Magisterii classification: 3.2-2.6 (alternative classification: An average performance, satisfactory in most areas; English translation or equivalent: 2:2).

Research degrees Entry Requirements
The usual entrance requirement for a research degree is a Master’s degree from a recognised university; schools may accept students with high grades in the undergraduate degree.
Applicants are strongly urged to contact potential supervisors within the department before submitting a research application.

- As an international student, you will be expected to self-finance your studies, so before you apply to join a programme you should be aware of the fees that you will be required to pay and any discounts or bursaries that you may be eligible for.
