Fabian Bielinsky’s Nine Queens (2000/2024) is paramount in the Argentinean cinema of the last decades, a perfect blend of auteur and industrial cinema. Its new remastered version is the pivotal example of a golden era of Argentinean cinema. As this era reaches its apparent end, the institutions which made Nine Queens possible are being dismantled by newly elected Javier Milei, a self-professed libertarian whose ultraliberal, authoritarian project has declared an open war on public cultural institutions. While the film follows the story of Juan, a con artist from Buenos Aires who stumbles upon a scam which might secure his father's release from prison, Nine Queens is much more than just a heist thriller. Its characters, themes, and thick mysteries drive a plot which unearths the complexities of an Argentinean society on the brink of economic collapse in the early 21st century; and which might give us clues to think through its authoritarian turn in the present.
