Except Palestine: Gender and Genocide - Amplifying Voices from Gaza and Building Anti-Colonial Feminist Solidarities

A joint symposium by the Birkbeck Institute of Social Research and the Institute of Women’s Studies, Birzeit University, Palestine

3pm, Wednesday 6 March

MAL B33, Malet Street Building, Birkbeck, University of London, Malet Street, WC1E 7HX

In this in-person event taking place in International Women’s Week, the ‘Except Palestine’ series comes to Birkbeck.

We will hear from scholars at Birzeit University who will join us online from Palestine and speak about women's experiences of displacement, the politics of gender in representations of the genocide, and Israel's weaponisation of women’s rights to delegitimise anti-colonial resistance, while specifically drawing from the experiences and articulations of women from Gaza.

We will also hear in-person from feminist scholars based in Britain who will reflect on the theme of countering colonial and imperial feminism and initiate a discussion with the audience of how to build feminist solidarities with Palestine.

Confirmed Speakers:

Dr Rema Hammami (Birzeit)

Orouba Othman (Birzeit)

Dr Rania Jawad (Birzeit)

Dr Rama Salla Dieng (Edinburgh)

Dr Tanya Serisier (Birkbeck)

Chair: Kalpana Wilson (Birkbeck)

This is the sixth town hall in a series of sessions held at UK Universities that discusses, and refuses, the erasure of Palestine. Other Except Palestine events have been held at LSE, SOAS, KCL, UCL, and City. Click here for recordings and details on past events.
