In this online taster lecture, you will have the opportunity to meet with your lecturer: Dr. Keith Mannock, ask questions about our programmes and gain an overview of the courses we offer, including the following:

Mathematics (Graudate Cert, Graduate Dipl)

Our Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate in Mathematics provide you with an opportunity to extend and refresh your skills and background knowledge in mathematics, whether you are looking to progress to further postgraduate study, have particular interests in this area, or simply wish to complement your previous mathematical education.

On these mathematics courses, you will gain crucial skills in understanding and applying core mathematics results from areas such as algebra, calculus and analysis. You will also learn the importance of rigorous mathematical arguments and gain understanding of key mathematical concepts that are the basis of postgraduate study in mathematics.

Designed to be as flexible as possible, on both of these courses you will have a choice of modules taken from our BSc Mathematics. You will meet with the course director before the start of the academic year and decide on a suitable course of study, based on your interests and experience.

Both the Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate are undergraduate-level qualifications that will prepare you for postgraduate study. They typically take one to two years to complete and are made up of two, three or four modules at final-year undergraduate degree level (worth 60, 90 or 120 credits).

Graduate Certificate: this course is also available to study online by distance learning with a January start. We have specifically developed the course materials and content to meet the needs of distance learners to offer you the flexibility you need to combine study with work.

 Applied Statistics (MSc, PG Cert)

Our applied statistics course has been specially designed to meet the personal and career development needs of people who want to continue working, or gain valuable interning experience, while also studying in the evening. Many of our students are involved in data analysis, the interpretation of statistics, the optimal design and control of systems, and the modelling and prediction of time-dependent phenomena. They bring a wealth of knowledge and experience into the classroom, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by committed, enthusiastic students from all backgrounds, careers and cultures. This course is ideal if you are considering a career move into statistics, or if your work already involves aspects of data collection and exploration, the interpretation of statistics, or the modelling and forecasting of time-dependent phenomena.

The course covers both the theory and the application of modern statistical and mathematical modelling techniques to applied problems in industry, public services, commerce and research. It proceeds from a strong theoretical background, but it is practically oriented to develop your ability to tackle new and non-standard problems confidently. The mutual dependence of practice and theory is emphasised throughout the course.

Statistics for Data Science (Graudate Cert)

Our Graduate Certificate in Statistics for Data Science introduces you to methods for the practical implementation of various types of statistical analysis, firmly grounded within the context of the underlying statistical theory and associated mathematics.

It is ideal if you are looking to upskill quickly in the theoretical underpinnings and practical implementation of the kinds of statistical analysis that are often required in the practice of data science.

It will give you the confidence to ask the right questions when presented with a statistical analysis to check through, and to carry out such an analysis by yourself using a high-level statistical programming language.

The philosophy that underpins the training given on this course is that of being both rigorous and applied. You will gain an understanding of some of the main statistical methods that are used in data science and will be able to apply these techniques to the analysis of real-world data sets. You will gain a thorough grounding in the use of R.

The course regularly attracts students from a wide range of backgrounds and professions, such as banking, dentistry, investment fund management, local and central government, medicine, retail and teaching. A number of entrepreneurs have gone on to successfully found and run their own statistical consultancies.

MSc Applied Statistics and Financial Modelling

While practically orientated, this MSc Applied Statistics and Financial Modelling proceeds from a strong theoretical background so as to develop your ability to tackle new and non-standard problems with confidence. The mutual dependence of practice and theory is emphasised wherever possible.

This Master's in financial modelling is ideal if you are considering a career move into statistics, or if your work already involves aspects of data collection and exploration, the interpretation of statistics, or the use of advanced stochastic modelling techniques in the area of quantitative finance. It covers both theory and application of stochastic and statistical modelling techniques required to solve applied problems in industry, the public services, scientific research and commerce.

The course has been specially designed to meet the personal and career development needs of people who want to continue working while also studying in the evening.
