In the week that Birkbeck turns 200, join us for the final talk in a series linked to Birkbeck Library’s bicentenary exhibition of archival treasures. Showcasing items from the College Archive and the Library’s image collections, throughout 2023 the changing displays have explored different aspects of Birkbeck’s 200-year history.

Professor Joanna Bourke, author of the new history of the College, Birkbeck: 200 Years of Radical Learning for Working People will explore the Library’s central role in the life of the College between 1823 and 2023, both as a hub of academic activity and as an embodiment of the democratizing force which the founding of the London Mechanics’ Institution represented.

Prof. Bourke will be joined for a discussion by Philippa Dolphin, Birkbeck’s Librarian from 1994–2004: a period which saw important changes, including the building of the current Library on Torrington Square.

The conversation will be followed by a Q&A and refreshments.

You are encouraged to arrive from 6.00pm, in order to view the display of original documents and images relating to the history of Birkbeck Library (Level 1).

Current Birkbeck students and staff may read Prof. Bourke’s book here.
