Automatic plagiarism checking for programming assessments

When:
Venue: Online

Many modules in our department require students to produce and submit code as coursework answers. Moodle Turnitin system is usually not able to detect similarity between submissions if a student submits existing code after renaming variables, changing layout, or other kinds of syntactic manipulations that do not require understanding. A freely available tool Moss is able to detect such modifications and present the results of detection in an accessible form. In this hands-on demo, I will demonstrate the methodology I use to maintain the students' submissions, upload them to moss, investigate the results and report them. This methodology is developed for the PoP module, but I will focus on key parts that would be suitable for any module using coding assessments.
