The University of Victoria, B.C., is on Coast Salish territory, the territory of the Lək̓ʷəŋən Peoples (Songhees and Esquimalt Nations), and has a close relationship with the neighboring WSÁNEĆ Peoples. The concept of the University of Victoria’s (UVic) new Indigenous Plan is predicated on the teaching shared with us by respected Coast Salish Elder and language holder, J'SINTEN, Dr. John Elliott – helping to move each other forward. It speaks to the work that we are doing to move away from colonial thinking and colonial systems, and to move forward, collectively. Critical to this work, is the inclusion of local Indigenous ways of knowing and being - weaving in Coast Salish knowledge that has existed in this territory for millennia.

Weaving, historically, was a practice that was central to Coast Salish peoples’ culture, knowledge transmission, and economic structure. It was also work that was often done by women and represented one of their roles as matriarchs in our communities. Coast Salish weaving is not only being revitalized in our communities, but is the metaphor we are embracing at UVic to weave in local teachings, language, laws and art, into our strategic documents, including our Strategic Plan and Indigenous Plan, our programs and our daily work, with the vision of helping to move each other forward. The lecture will focus on the collaborative work I’m involved in at UVic in my role as Director, Indigenous University Initiatives.
