Join us for the first in a series of four talks linked to Birkbeck Library’s bicentenary exhibition of archival treasures. Showcasing items from the College Archive and the Library’s image collections, throughout 2023 the changing displays will explore different aspects of Birkbeck’s 200-year history.

How do you found a university in a tavern? Professor Joanna Bourke, author of the brand-new history of the College, Birkbeck: 200 Years of Radical Learning for Working People will share the exciting story of Birkbeck's beginnings. Her talk will be followed by a Q&A and refreshments.

You are encouraged to arrive from 6.00pm, in order to view the display of original documents and images relating to the early history of the College (Library, Level 1).

Current Birkbeck students and staff can read Prof. Bourke’s book here.
