Conference Around the Clock – audio feature
Have you ever wondered why so many people are going to conferences as part of their work and sometimes leisure? In this event, a group of historians and artists have teamed up to shed light on what actually happens at international scientific conferences. Participants will be able to immerse themselves in the sounds and feelings of a conference. If you have never been to one before, this will demystify the ‘conference phenomenon’. If you are a seasoned conference goers, you can reflect on your own conference experiences.
During the event, participants will be invited to experience an audio performance in the form of four 15-minute audio features, using interviews, musical composition and sounds to invoke an international scientific conference. The audio project has been developed by the artist Mariana Castillo Deball (https://castillodeball.org/about/).
The event draws on the HERA-funded research project on ‘The Scientific Conference’ (http://sciconf.nu/). Our research demonstrates that conferences have played crucial and persistent roles in the construction of scientific disciplines since the early 19th century. They also became techniques for conducting international relations and arriving at a consensus on contested questions. They played (and continue to play) key roles in the building of professional communities.
