A City of London & Birkbeck Roundtable Event on Entrepreneurship and Green Finance

We are delighted to announce that we will be hosting a joint event with the City of London to discuss entrepreneurship and green finance. This event will take place in person on Monday 25 July at Barnard’s Inn Hall, Gresham College located in Holborn, London. 

Join the Livery Climate Action Group, Worshipful Company of World Traders, Z/Yen’s FS Club, and Birkbeck, University of London for a round table discussion on Entrepreneurship and Green Finance.

5.00pm   Welcome and Introduction –Professor David Latchman, Vice-Chancellor, Birkbeck, University of London 

5.10pm   Alderman Prem Goyal OBE JP (Chair), City of London

Entrepreneurial green finance covering examples in the UK, India, and Japan.

5.15pm   Dr Paul Elsner, Lecturer in Geographic Data Science, Birkbeck, University of London

Dr Elsner will talk about the economic advantages of renewable energy systems and why investments in solar and wind are stabilising financial systems. He will also look at the emerging hydrogen economy and how this will create new global energy superpowers.

5.30pm  Shalom Lloyd, Entrepreneur, Naturally Tribal Skincare

In this talk, Shalom will show how she has made sustainability the core of her business and how this remains part of the challenge to addressing climate change in practice.  She will show the issues of converting grand policies into reality and how even small steps make a difference.

5.45pm  Dr Ellen Yu, Senior Lecturer in Finance at Birkbeck, University of London                                         

Ellen will talk about how environmental factors may influence companies' financing strategies. She will share how a company's green innovation and its disclosure of environmental information to the public can impact its financing costs. Cross-country examples will be provided. 

6.00pm  Richard Jones, Serial Entrepreneur and Investor 

Discussion drawn from his experience in starting businesses with sustainable finance issues and opportunities. This will be compared with emerging markets where the view of a just transition is perhaps different.

6.15pm  Panel discussion with the audience chaired by Alderman Prem Goyal

BIOGRAPHIES 

Professor David Latchman is Vice Chancellor of Birkbeck and he took up this appointment in 2003. He has also been Professor of Genetics at University College London since 1999. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2010 for his services to higher education. Since his appointment, Professor Latchman has been an advocate of lifelong learning, in a system that focuses on funding school leavers’ degrees over others.

Prem Goyal OBE JP is an Alderman of the City of London. He also serves as a school governor, a trustee for Shelter and is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. Prem is an Advisor to Hinduja Investments & Project Services, leading 11 business verticals and outreach in 48 countries. He is also a Senior Advisor on the Economic and Commercial Diplomacy Advisory Group at the International Business and Diplomatic Exchange (IBDE), a Council Member of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), a Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) International Committee and a Council Member at the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI). In parallel, Prem launched Global Markets Consultants (GMC) in 2002 and has been its CEO and CFO since then, managing its investments, financial accounting, tax filings and CSR efforts.

Growing up in India, Prem earned his bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) before winning a scholarship for a Master’s in Engineering at Clarkson University. Prem then obtained an MBA from UCLA and graduated with the Dean’s Outstanding Student Award. He has also completed executive education at Chicago Booth University. Prem has travelled to c. 125 countries and was awarded an OBE for services to the economy and promoting charitable giving in 2012.

Dr Paul Elsner lectures in a wide variety of geographical areas including natural environments, analysis and techniques, energy and climate change, and earth observation, environmental dynamics and mobile data collection.

Shalom Lloyd is an award winning entrepreneur who has established her own international company, Naturally Tribal Skincare, along ethical lines. She is working with the Kingdom of Essan in Nigeria on infrastructure and trade with the aim of Naturally Tribal Products becoming a portal through which Essan’s rich cultural identity can be accessed by the world.

Dr Ellen Yu is Senior Lecturer in Finance at Birkbeck College, University of London. Her research interests focus on asset management and financial topics relevant to the research fields of environmental, social responsibility and governance (ESG). Her recent publications include papers in the Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, Business Strategy and the Environment, International Review of Financial Analysis, Journal of Investing, and the Journal of Fixed Income.

Richard Jones is a serial entrepreneur and investor, Richard has immense experience with green financing and startups both in the UK and overseas.
