Week 10: Civil Disobedience

To call an instance of lawbreaking ‘conscientious objection’ or ‘civil disobedience’ is to accord it a moral status different from mere criminality. Such terms are often used to claim moral justification for acts of lawbreaking, and to claim leniency in treatment, e.g. by the courts. But what is civil disobedience, and when, if ever, is it morally justified?
