Study Skills: Academic reading & notemaking using apps & software

Venue: Online

In this workshop, we will take a look at what we mean by reading speed and reading comprehension, revisit key strategies for academic reading and then focus on technology to support these strategies. Multisensory learning has been shown to improve concentration and comprehension. This will include ‘text-to-speech’ software, where you can listen to your reading to aid comprehension.

The suggested strategies will focus on some tools that are freely available on most computers and mobile devices, as well as offering some suggestions for low-cost apps. There are also options for students who would find it helpful to invest in more advanced software.

This online workshop will take place on a Blackboard Collaborate link within the Birkbeck Study Skills Moodle Module. It is intended for enrolled Birkbeck students only, and you will require your student login details to access the workshop. To learn more, watch our two-minute Breaking Barriers Kit explainer video
