There are many ways to characterize a professional photographer's relation to her subject but most can be said to fall on one of two sides: that of objectifying---think of ethnographic or pornographic or commercial or artistic photography, for example---or that of subjectivizing---think of almost any photograph that casts itself as a "portrait." This talk will explore a different relational form by considering correspondences between the mature work of Paul Strand and contemporaneous developments in the theory and practice of labor organizing.
