Creating art through loss – a discussion of the reparative force of creativity on the mourning body.

Contemporary artists Fay Ballard and Judy Goldhill will showcase selected artworks that have been informed by the process of bereavement and mourning and speak about the reparative act of creativity on the individual. Dr Elizabeth Pimentel de Çetin will be speaking about the psychoanalytic and mythological context of the psyche and trauma. Carly Robinson will then talk about her research into works of contemporary literary fiction and non-fiction that utilise creative practice as a response to difficult times and trauma. This will lead into a discussion forum where participants can ask questions or speak about their own experience of creativity as a way of navigating difficult times in their life.

The event will conclude with Fay, Judy, Carly and Eli each offering a series of prompts for participants to use if they wish, as a means to formulate their own creative responses to a difficult issue/experience (to encompass art/writing/and other creative mediums). Audience participation is not mandatory within the session, rather we want to offer tools and an opportunity for participants to go away and take their time engaging in a creative practice of their choosing.

This event is supported by Dandelion, the postgraduate network of Birkbeck School of Arts.
