Speakers:

Rachael Parker, Research and Analysis Officer in the Evidence and Insight team at MOPAC

Rachael Parker is a Research and Analysis Officer at the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC), where she has worked for the past four years. Rachael’s role is around policy research and the evaluation of programmes that are funded by MOPAC. She has previously evaluated programmes targeting prolific offenders, serious youth violence, and female offending. Rachael is currently evaluating a project called the Lighthouse; an innovative and multi-agency service for victims of child sexual abuse and exploitation, which aims to reduce trauma for victims and improve criminal justice outcomes. Rachael holds a BA degree in Sociology with Social Psychology from the University of York, and an MSc in Countering Organised Crime and Terrorism from UCL.

Tim Read, Research and Analysis Officer in the Evidence and Insight team at MOPAC

Tim Read is a Research and Analysis Officer in the Evidence and Insight team in MOPAC (the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime). He has nearly 30 years of experience as a researcher in the criminal justice system.  He worked for 8 years in the Home Office’s Police Research Group undertaking and managing research into various aspects of policing. He then spent 15 years as a Senior Lecturer at the University of the West of England and the University of South Wales lecturing on community safety and policing. His time at the universities was separated by a couple of years working for a research consultancy specialising in crime prevention. He has been in his current role for two and a half years. His work mainly involves evaluations of the Lighthouse Project (a specialised service for victims of child sexual abuse in Camden), and the use of GPS tags for prolific and knife crime offenders. Tim has a first degree in History and Economic and Social History from Bristol University, and an MSc in Criminal Justice from Brunel University.

Laura Woods, Research and Analysis Officer in the Evidence and Insight team at MOPAC

Since graduating with a degree in Geography (BA) from the University of Nottingham, Laura Woods has worked as a social researcher in the public sector. Laura is currently a Research and Analysis Officer in the Evidence and Insight team at the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC). In this role, Laura has worked on projects around crime trends, scrutiny of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and Londoners views and experiences of policing. Alongside her role at MOPAC, Laura is studying for a MSc in Social Policy and Social Research at University College London (UCL). Prior to this, Laura was a Government Social Researcher at the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG). Here, her main research areas included integration and faith, community cohesion and local government finance.

About Criminology Careers Events
Criminology Careers Events introduce students to criminology related employers and the opportunities and challenges involved in developing a career path. Events cover:

  • The practicalities of developing a career, from work experience to recruitment.
  • Themes relevant to criminology research and teaching, from criminal justice policy and practice to social and racial justice.

Each session lasts 90 minutes, and involves short talks from a panel of professionals who explain how they arrived at their current role. There is opportunity for group Q&A as well as informal 1-1 time with speakers. Events are an opportunity to socialise with peers in the department. Refreshments and snacks are provided.
