Join us for an evening with Professor Francesco Caselli as he presents his new book, Cooperatives in the Twenty-First Century (Harvard University Press).
How can we build an economy that delivers shared prosperity and inclusive growth?
In Cooperatives in the Twenty-First Century, Francesco Caselli challenges the conventional approach to tackling economic inequality, which relies primarily on redistributing income through taxation. Instead, he argues for addressing inequality at its source by rethinking how firms are organised and how the wealth they generate is shared.
Drawing on decades of economic research, Caselli develops a blueprint for an economy in which conventional corporations are replaced by worker-managed cooperatives. He shows how carefully designed cooperatives can combine economic efficiency with a more equitable distribution of prosperity, without relying on worker altruism or sacrificing individual incentives.
The book tackles some of the fundamental questions of organisational economics: how should worker democracy operate? How should management and decision-making be structured? How can cooperatives ensure worker discipline, align incentives and protect the rights of their members?
Using economic theory and real-world examples, including Spain's Mondragon federation, Caselli makes the case that worker cooperatives are not simply an idealistic alternative to capitalism, but a viable model for organising productive activity in the twenty-first century.
Join us for a discussion with Professor Francesco Caselli about the economic foundations of worker cooperatives and their potential to create a more productive and equitable economy.
