Birkbeck Institute of the Moving Image (supported by CFFCS, CILAVS and the Courtauld Institute), 43 Gordon Square, Thursday December 3rd, 2026, 2-5pm
You are warmly invited to the first ever UK screening, with brief introductory talks by Alfia Nakipbekova and Anne Malraux, of the newly restored film Sierra de Teruel plus a Q&A after the screening. This is an unprecedented, exciting opportunity to watch and discuss this fully restored, historic 1938–1939 Spanish-French war film directed by French writer André Malraux and Boris Peskine with a screenplay co-written by Malraux and Mexican-Spanish novelist Max Aub. The film is based on Malraux's own 1937 novel L'Espoir (Man's Hope), which was inspired by his real-life experiences as commander of a volunteer air squadron during the Spanish Civil War.
