Once Upon a Time in Production: A Masterclass with Jacques Bidou
Friday 20 November, 2:30–5:00pm
Birkbeck Cinema 43 Gordon Square, WC1H 0PD
A rare chance to hear from one of France’s most renowned and risk-taking film producers. Over four decades, Jacques Bidou has delivered more than 30 award-winning features and 70 documentaries, working with directors from over 25 countries and steering co-productions through shifting politics and cultural challenges. With his co-production partner Marianne Dumoulin, he has worked with filmmakers including Alice Rohrwacher, Raoul Peck, Tsai Ming-liang, Patricio Guzmán, Annemarie Jacir, Merzak Allouache and Massoud Bakhshi.
Illustrated with extracts from his films, Bidou will discuss trends in independent production, past and present. He will talk about building the core relationship between filmmakers and their projects, making impossible budgets add up and handling the backstage deals that carry an international production through to the screen.
The masterclass will be chaired by Holly Aylett, independent filmmaker and Honorary Research Fellow at Birkbeck, and the English translator of Bidou’s memoir, Once Upon a Time in Production, which will be launched at our BIMI evening later.
