This is suitable for PhD students with no previous experience of teaching or assisting teaching or those who are keen to refresh their knowledge and skills as part of a supportive cohort.
The course will provide you with the opportunity to join a cross-college network of your peers, with whom you can discuss your classroom challenges and achievements, and work together to identify and share good practice in learning and teaching approaches.
Start to Teach Sessions
Session 1: An introduction to HE pedagogy; activities for creating positive classroom cultures; and exploring how to deal with common challenges in HE teaching
Session 2: Technology Enhanced Teaching in HE- this is led by our Digital Education Team and provides exploration of pedagogic frameworks for use of teaching technology; demonstrations on how lecturers are using tech tools in their teaching; opportunities to experience a variety of emerging teaching tech e.g. the Immersive Learning Suite
Session 3: Student are divided into breakout groups and will deliver microteach sessions of their own design (20 mins aimed at level 5). They are observed by academics at Birkbeck and provided feedback and opportunities for reflection.
