Transnational Diaries: a conversation across borders
When:
—
Venue:
Birkbeck 43 Gordon Square
This interdisciplinary roundtable takes place in and around the Transnational Diaries exhibition at the Peltz Gallery. Bringing together researchers from across Birkbeck, the discussion will explore themes of migration, mobility, urban life and everyday globalisation through conversation with the exhibition.
Transnational Diaries portrays the lives, stories and journeys of Chinese migrant traders who run family-owned shops in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Developed through collaborative workshops with first- and second-generation migrants, the exhibition follows the movements of people, goods, memories and relationships across places, generations and national borders.
Beginning in the streets of Belo Horizonte and now displayed at the Peltz Gallery in London, the exhibition traces connections between distant places while inviting reflection on the social, economic and emotional dimensions of transnational life. Drawing on the exhibition as a point of departure, the roundtable will consider how migration, trade, belonging and urban change shape contemporary cities and connect everyday lives across the globe.
