The digitisation of the archive at Avebury was an explicitly prefigurative practice. Executed by an incredible team of volunteers and explored creatively by students, artists, technologists and other creatives. We've used it to explore the idea of archaeology as worldbuilding; arranging data into useful, expressive categories to encourage reuse. The result of this explicit framing was an outstanding array of approaches and interpretations of Avebury. In this talk I discuss the logistics and improbabilities of this archive and hopeful futures for creative archival in archaeology.
Colleen Morgan is the Senior Lecturer in Digital Archaeology and Heritage in the Department of Archaeology at the University of York. She is the Director of the Digital Archaeology and Heritage Lab, the MSc in Digital Archaeology and the MSc in Digital Heritage.
